Press Release The Coral Reef Alliance and Caribbean WebCams “Dive into Earth Day”BONAIRE, N.A. April 12, 2001 - The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has asked underwater enthusiasts around the world to "Dive into Earth Day", and in support of their effort, Caribbean WebCams, the operators of the world famous Bonaire WebCams, is sponsoring a 'Support Earth Day via the WebCams' event. Images from the Bonaire WebCams, which include the world’s first coral reef WebCam (the ReefCam), and several topside WebCams, can be viewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the Internet at www.BonaireWebCams.com. The Bonaire WebCams Earth Day event will run the whole week before Earth Day, April 22nd, and will involve divers underwater and on land showing their support for Earth Day and CORAL via the Bonaire ReefCamTM and Bonaire StreetCamTM. From Sunday, April 15th to Sunday, April 22nd, people will be able to use special laminated signs available at the Bonaire StreetCam (at Kaya Rotterdam 2) to show thousands of StreetCam viewers around the world that they support planet Earth. Divers wanting to do the same via the world-famous Bonaire ReefCam will be able to get similar signs from supporting Bonaire dive operators to help show their support live, underwater at the Small Wall dive site on Bonaire, where the ReefCam is situated. "Here at Bon Bini Divers, we have found that our diving guests immensely enjoy the opportunity to visit the Small Wall dive site from our boats and pose for the ReefCam! To show our support during Dive Into Earth Day and its related programs during the week, Bon Bini Divers will be offering boat departures to the ReefCam so that our guests may indicate to those watching the ReefCam that they support coral reefs worldwide,” stated Susan Davis, manager of Bon Bini Divers, one the dive operators participating in the CORAL/ReefCam event. “What a wonderful way to show your love of the underwater environment, but be sure to watch your buoyancy! After all, the world will be watching!" she added as advise to anyone planning to participate in this unique event. Other participating Bonaire dive operators and resorts are Photo Tours Divers and Captain Don’t Habitat, who will each be running special ReefCam dive trips during the week. Petitions in support of an Earth Day declaration will be available at the StreetCam and at supporting dive operators. In addition to being seen live, all images featuring Earth Day supporters captured from the WebCams will be archived and be available for everyone to review on-line after the Earth Day event completes - the people showing the most innovative (and clean) support for Earth Day on the WebCams will receive special Bonaire WebCams t-shirts - with participants' identity determined by the petitions and with the assistance of the support dive operators and the StreetCam guest book. “Everyone who is concerned about the welfare of our marine environment should show their support for CORAL’s Dive In to Earth Day event. And this year showing your support got even easier. Above or below water - go sign up and get yourself pictured on the Bonaire ReefCam and Bonaire StreetCam,” said Kalli DeMeyer, CORAL’s Director of the Coral Parks Program. The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) promotes coral reef conservation around the world by working with the dive industry, governments, local communities and other organizations to protect and manage coral reefs, establish marine parks, fund conservation efforts, and raise public awareness with the mission to keep coral reefs alive for future generations. CORAL is coordinating Dive In To Earth Day, which is co-sponsored by Rodale’s Scuba Diving Magazine, the Center for Marine Conservation, the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), PADI AWARE Foundation, Reef Check, Oceanwatch, the Hammerheads and Earth Day Network.
